A photo circulating on social media purportedly shows Afghan teenager Qamar Gul.
A teenage girl in Afghanistan has shot dead two Taliban militants and injured several others in an act of retaliation for the killing of her parents.
Afghan officials said Tuesday that the incident happened last week when militants stormed the home of Qamar Gul, who is in her mid-teens, in a village in the central Afghan province of Ghor.
Local police chief Habiburahman Malekzada said that the Taliban militants were after her father - who was a village chief and a supporter of the Kabul government - and ended up dragging him and his wife outside of Guls home before killing them.
"Qamar Gul, who was inside the house, took an AK-47 gun the family had and first shot dead the two Taliban fighters who killed her parents, and then injured a few others," the police official said.
Local residents said the militants later returned to attack Guls residence a second time. But pro-government militiamen and other villagers were able to disperse them following a gun battle.
Gul and her younger brother reportedly were then escorted by Afghan security forces to a safer location.
A photo circulating on social media purportedly depicts the teenager holding the gun that was used to strike back at the Taliban.
The Taliban militant group has long been known to target the citizens it suspects of being pro-government.
In recent months, the Taliban have carried out near-daily attacks across various parts of Afghanistan. On Monday, at least eight soldiers were killed after a bomber detonated an explosives-packed truck close to an Afghan military convoy in Sayed Abad district of Wardak Province near the capital, Kabul.
Official data shows that Taliban bombings and other assaults have increased 70 percent since the militant group signed a "peace" deal with the United States in February.
